Philip Paul, King Records; Kent Butts, King Records LegacyKing Records has been in the news in the past few years and, at the 2018 Fall Forum, our guests heard about the extraordinary roll the studio played in the development of several styles of American music. King’s location in Cincinnati, a crossroad of both Appalachian and African American migrations of the early to mid-twentieth century made it the perfect place to combine musical traditions. The Cincinnati location enabled King Records to launch the careers of such diverse legends as James Brown and the Stanley Brothers. The guests also heard the story of saving the facility from demolition, an effort that included an unprecedented unanimous vote by city council to use imminent domain if necessary.
