Volunteer Spotlight

Karen Andrew – Star Volunteer

Although she volunteered at high school and church functions, Karen Andrew attributes her dedication to volunteering to the  Girl Scouts. She was a member most of her childhood and says scouting was the best activity she was involved in as a child.  “I think children should learn volunteerism from an early age,” said Karen. “The act of unselfish giving of  time makes for a well-rounded individual.  I believe Cincinnati is a great place for volunteer opportunities.”

Karen is a member of several organizations, including the Greater Cincinnati Rose Association. Here she met Margo Warminski, now CPA’s Preservation Director, who introduced her to the organization’s volunteer opportunities.  I love history and visiting historical sites. I got this from my dad who always included visiting historical sites in our family vacation and weekend outings,” said Karen. “After moving to Cincinnati in 1990, I began discovering all the historical districts and historically significant houses and buildings.”

Volunteering as a guide on the CPA homes tours allows Karen to tour homes that are not normally open to the public.   For the last two years she has co-chaired a tour home.  She is also on the board of the Ohio River Valley Chapter, Victorian Society in America, which enables her to tour and learn about historic homes as well as public buildings.

She is also a member of the Northside Writing Group and Society for Professional Journalists. Other memberships include Northside Greenspace, Northside Community Council, and Citizens on Patrol in Northside.
